IB Chemistry Tutor in London
Specialist one-to-one IB Chemistry tuition at SL and HL — taught in person across Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, Richmond upon Thames, Wandsworth and all of central London, and online everywhere else.
Taught by Waseem, who has around thirty years of one-to-one tutoring experience in Chemistry — helping students improve their understanding, lift their grades, and build genuine interest and confidence in a subject that too often gets reduced to memorising.
- SL and HL, both papers
- IA lab investigation support
- In person or online
- Chemistry specialist, not a generalist agency
Tailored lessons, IA and lab investigation guidance, complete notes, and past paper and question bank practice — the whole route to a 7 in one place.
A note from Waseem
I can help you improve your grades and, just as importantly, your interest and confidence in IB Chemistry — whether you are sitting SL or HL.
We begin with whatever your school is teaching that week, with the underlying basics revised alongside it. The aim is that you become productive in class rather than spending every lesson catching up, and that you start taking an active part in class discussion instead of hoping not to be asked.
From there we practise questions tiered by difficulty, so your time goes on what you are struggling with rather than what you can already do. For topics you have finished, we work through past papers topic by topic, and any weakness that surfaces is addressed there and then rather than noted and forgotten.
I guide you through the Internal Assessment from choosing a topic to troubleshooting a method that refuses to behave. If your Extended Essay is in Chemistry, I support that too, and I treat the deadline as real. Where a concept needs to be understood intuitively rather than memorised, we stay with it until it genuinely makes sense.
On academic integrity: all support with the IA, lab work and the Extended Essay is guidance within IB ethical standards. The investigation, the data and the writing remain your own.

What one-to-one IB Chemistry tuition covers
The Diploma rewards a small number of things done properly. These are the four that move a grade.
SL and HL teaching
Full coverage of Structure and Reactivity across both levels, with the HL extension material taught to the depth the Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions actually demand. Students moving between SL and HL get a bridging plan rather than a shrug — energetics, equilibrium, organic mechanisms and the reactivity themes rebuilt from the ideas they are missing.
IB Chemistry IA help
Structured IA lab investigation support from the first shaky research question to the final submitted draft. We narrow the question until it is measurable, argue through the independent and dependent variables, plan the controls, handle uncertainty and error propagation honestly, and hold the evaluation to the standard the criteria expect. If a starting point is what’s missing, begin with the 75 IA starter ideas for SL and HL Chemistry.
Exam preparation
IB Chemistry exam preparation built on past papers rather than around them. Timed sections, marked by hand against the mark scheme, followed by the part most students skip: working out why a mark was lost. Command terms, data booklet fluency, multiple-choice pacing and the long-answer structure that examiners reward.
Notes, question banks and the EE
Complete topic notes and topic-wise question sets, given as we go so revision has a spine. The free IB Chemistry question bank and revision notes are open to everyone, tutored or not. Extended Essays in Chemistry are supported alongside, with the timeline planned backwards from the submission date.
The 2026 results London students are measured against
A useful reality check when a school report says “on track”. The provisional 2026 UK league table below shows the average Diploma points score at each school; the London and Greater London schools are marked. King’s College School Wimbledon and Godolphin & Latymer in Hammersmith placed third and fifth in the world this year.

Read the columns together and the point becomes clear. A cohort average of 40 means a room full of capable students, and inside that room a 5 in HL Chemistry still pulls a total down hard. The subject is consistently one of the heaviest scoring risks in a strong Diploma profile — which is why targeted IB Chemistry tuition tends to buy more points per hour than spreading effort thinly across six subjects.
Year 1 decides more than most families expect
Support is usually requested in the spring of Year 2. By then the most consequential decisions have already been made — quietly, months earlier.
- Predicted grades come out of Year 1 work. Teachers set them from mocks and coursework completed long before the final exams, and universities see the prediction, not the potential.
- UCAS and US applications are written in the autumn of Year 2. The academic record they rest on closed at the end of Year 1.
- The Internal Assessment starts in Year 1. A rushed research question chosen in a free period costs marks that no amount of Year 2 revision recovers.
- Chemistry compounds. Moles, bonding and energetics are load-bearing. A shaky start makes HL organic and equilibrium far harder than they need to be.
This is set out in full in our post on why IB Year 1 matters for university applications. The short version: a student who arrives in Year 2 with clean foundations and a finished IA draft is competing on a different footing.
Thank you Waseem for helping me get 7 in Chemistry
Sevens are not handed out for effort. They come from a student who can read what a question is really asking, reach for the right relationship without hesitating, and write an answer an examiner can award marks to. That is a trainable skill, and it is what the lessons are built to train.
Waseem is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society with around thirty years of one-to-one teaching in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics across London and Dubai. More about his experience as a specialist IB tutor.
My daughter was a student of Mr Waseem’s for two years during her IB HL Chemistry course, and in that time he helped improve her grades by two and a half points. He explained everything carefully and clearly, and is extremely knowledgeable about the subject as well as in physics and maths, to set it in context. He answered all her questions and pointed out the areas she needed to focus on to sharpen her exam technique.

Book the free consultationQuestions London families ask
Which parts of London do you cover for in-person lessons?
Face-to-face IB Chemistry tuition runs across all of central London, Westminster, Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith & Fulham, the Borough of Richmond upon Thames, Wandsworth and the surrounding areas. If you are just outside that ring, ask anyway — travel is sometimes workable, and if it isn’t, online lessons run to the same plan and the same standard.
Do you teach both SL and HL Chemistry?
Yes, both, including students deciding whether to move between them. HL work goes into the extension material properly rather than treating it as SL with extra pages, and SL students get teaching pitched at their paper rather than a diluted HL course.
Can you help with the Chemistry IA and the lab investigation?
IA support is one of the most requested parts of the work: choosing and narrowing the research question, designing a method that survives contact with a real lab, handling uncertainties and error analysis, and structuring the evaluation against the assessment criteria. All of it is guidance. The investigation, the data and the writing stay the student’s own, in line with IB academic integrity rules.
Do you support the Extended Essay in Chemistry?
Yes, where the EE topic is Chemistry-related. That covers shaping a research question that can actually be answered in four thousand words, sequencing the work so the deadline is met rather than survived, and reviewing drafts against the criteria — again as guidance, with the essay remaining the student’s own work.
My child is in Year 1. Isn’t it too early for a tutor?
It is the opposite of too early. Predicted grades, the IA and the whole university application rest on Year 1 performance. Starting then means building foundations rather than repairing them, and it usually costs fewer hours overall than a Year 2 rescue.
How do online lessons compare with meeting in person?
Closer than most parents expect. Sessions use a shared annotated whiteboard, screen-shared past papers and mark schemes, and a recording the student can revisit. In-person lessons still have an edge for long IA discussions and for students who work better with someone physically beside them, which is why both are offered.
How do we start?
With a free consultation. We talk through the school, the current grade, the target, the exam session and any IA deadlines, then set out a plan and a realistic view of what it will take. There is no obligation to book lessons afterwards. Use the contact form or send a WhatsApp message to +44 7404 710097.
