IB Chemistry tuition in Switzerland: three things that move an SL or HL grade
You may not have a pure knowledge problem. Often, it is a marks problem. But if genuine gaps do exist in concepts, numericals, or terminology, my personal IB Chemistry tuition plugs them fast. I drill the tricky questions, focus on proper exam vocabulary, and target the small details that cost marks. Most importantly, I teach you exactly how to structure your answers. You will learn to write completely enough to secure every mark, yet concisely enough to beat the clock. That is my edge.
You can also explore my IB Chemistry IA ideas and tutor profile.
Exam technique that earns the mark
- Paper 1 timing and elimination on multiple choice
- Paper 2 structured questions: how “explain”, “deduce” and “justify” are actually marked
- Reading the data booklet fast and correctly
- Significant figures, units and the marks quietly lost to both
- Past-paper drilling by topic, then by paper, against the clock
IB Chemistry IA help, start to finish
- Choosing a research question that can actually score in Analysis
- Controlling variables so the method survives Exploration
- Uncertainty propagation and error analysis done properly
- Evaluation that names real limitations, not filler
- Structured feedback against the current criteria — your work, your words
HL depth, not surface revision
- Energetics, Born–Haber and entropy where HL bites hardest
- Equilibrium, Kc and Le Châtelier under exam conditions
- Acids, bases, buffers and titration curve interpretation
- Organic mechanisms — nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition
- Redox, electrochemical cells and electrolysis calculations
- Spectroscopy: IR, MS and 1H NMR structure deduction

Students have progressed from struggling with HL Chemistry to achieving 7s, with improvements in confidence, understanding and exam technique often becoming apparent within the first few lessons.Waseem, founder, iBLaurel
Where students go next. Waseem’s students have gone on to leading universities in the UK, the United States, Canada and Europe. Many finish above the score they first set out to reach — and it is usually the parents and the school teachers who are most pleasantly surprised. If your child is still in the first year of the Diploma, you may also find my practical guide on how to use IB Year 1 strategically for predicted grades and university applications helpful.
Why it works. The key ingredient is interest. Once a student finds Chemistry genuinely interesting, learning stops being a chore and the stress drops away — and the grade follows. That is the part of the job Waseem most enjoys.
These are statements of what has happened in his own teaching, not a guarantee of any individual result. IB grades depend on the student’s starting point, the time left before exams, and the work they put in between lessons.
Lab support without a lab. Practical work stays at school — what we add is the thinking around it: designing the method, handling raw data, propagating uncertainty, and writing it up so it scores.

Questions about online IB Chemistry tutoring in Switzerland
Lessons are online — does that actually work for Chemistry?
Yes, and for Chemistry it is often better. Everything happens on a shared digital whiteboard: mechanisms drawn arrow by arrow, Born–Haber cycles built up in front of your child, past-paper answers marked live in the IB’s own mark-scheme language. Your child keeps the annotated page afterwards. Lessons run on Swiss time (CET) — Switzerland is one hour ahead of the UK, so a 6pm or 7pm slot in Geneva is comfortably within the teaching evening.
Can you help with the IA if the practical work is done at school?
That is exactly the right split. The lab work stays with the school. We work on the parts that decide the grade: sharpening the research question, tightening the variables, handling raw data and uncertainty properly, and structuring the evaluation. The writing stays your child’s own — we give feedback against the criteria rather than text to copy, which keeps it clean under IB academic integrity rules.
Is this SL or HL — and how late is too late to start?
Both SL and HL, and the approach differs. HL needs genuine depth in energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms; SL usually needs precision and exam discipline more than extra content. Starting in the autumn of Year 2 gives the most room, but focused work in the final term still moves grades — especially where the marks are being lost on technique rather than knowledge.
How do we know after one lesson whether it is worth continuing?
The first lesson is diagnostic. Your child works through real questions while Waseem watches where the marks actually leak — recall, method, or exam technique. He is easy to talk to, so students tend to say what they don’t understand instead of hiding it, which is half the battle. You get a short written summary of what he found and what he would do about it. No packages, no minimum term.
